With the natural process of aging, thinning, sagging and wrinkling of the skin is to be expected. Collagen is a protein that gives us tightness and firmness to our skin. With time, the body produces less collagen and what remains can become thin and stretched.

The FDA has two technologies that have been approved for skin tightening. Thermage and Titan. Thermage uses radio frequency and Titan uses infrared light energy to heat the dermis (deep) where collagen is located. They both incorporate cooling tips to avoid burns to the epidermis (surface). The heat denatures collagen or wrinkles up the strands. This causes skin to contract and the surface area decreases. Both Theramage and Titan are excellent for general skin tightening.

Wrinkles can be addressed with ablative resurfacing techniques. We use Erbium, Erbium Profractional from Sciton and or Pearl Fractional from Cutera. Although facial resurfacing using a laser can yield great results, the downtime can be a week or more. Our preferred method is Fractional resurfacing or removing rod like sections of the skin spaced strategically apart. The result is a much deeper treatment with less downtime.

Technologies can be mixed and matched for the desired outcome. For example, Thermage combined with Pearl Fractional will give results that could be like a mini facelift, without the downtime of surgery.

Discoloration in terms of spots, freckles, moles and melasma can be reduced or removed by many methods. With time, age spots or Solar lintigos may also appear. There are a variety of methods to reduce unwanted spots depending on what type of spot and if it is raised or flat. Moles should always be checked to make sure it is not cancerous prior to contemplating removal.

The most common method in treatment of flat spots are by IPL or “Intense Pulse Light”. IPL is simply a xeon light that is flashed onto the treatment area. The energy level is adjusted so that the darker spots are damaged and the normal skin is undamaged. We use either Limelite from Cutera or BBL from Sciton. The benefit of this treatment is that there is typically no scarring, no downtime, make up can be used and the only caution is to avoid direct sunlight after the treatment. The following day of the treatment, you will notice that your spots will have gotten darker. This is due to the spots being damaged by the IPL and as your body tries to push it out, it will look darker. After four to seven days, the damages spots will have been naturally exfoliated and you can see the final result.

For raised spots or Solar lintigos, we use the Sciton Erbium laser to vaporize the spots off. When the skin grows back, it will heal without the raised spot coming back.

For more difficult spots or with melasma, we use a combination of technologies to reduce the appearance of these lesions.

These types of treatments are very safe when performed within safe parameters. However, the risk of side effects increase with darker skin types. We are well experienced with Asian and Olive skin types, as well as with Caucasian skin. Our methods and equipment is especially chosen to provide safe effective treatments with light to darker skin types.

Wikipedia describes Acne as follows. Acne occurs most commonly during adolescence, and often continues into adulthood. In adolescence, acne is usually caused by an increase in testosterone, which people of both genders accrue during puberty. For most people, acne diminishes over time and tends to disappear — or at the very least decrease — after one reaches one’s early twenties. There is, however, no way to predict how long it will take to disappear entirely, and some individuals will carry this condition well into their thirties, forties, and beyond.

Acne vulgaris (or cystic acne) is a common human skin disease, characterized by areas of skin with seborrhea (scaly red skin), comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules (pinheads), pustules (pimples), Nodules (large papules) and possibly scarring. Acne affects mostly skin with the densest population of sebaceous follicles; these areas include the face, the upper part of the chest, and the back. Severe acne is inflammatory, but acne can also manifest in noninflammatory forms. The lesions are caused by changes in pilosebaceous units, skin structures consisting of a hair follicle and its associated sebaceous gland, changes that require androgen stimulation.

The psychological factor to acne can be extremely stressful to sufferers and the ranges of treatment options are daunting. The multitude of topicals, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, medications, laser and or light treatments, can be confusing at best.

We have found that people respond differently to different types of treatments. Aggressive methods can often have unwanted side effects and gains can be only temporary in nature.

At Trinity, we treat acne patients in stages depending on how severe and the type of acne is present. For severe cases, we calm down the active acne and then progress to reduce scars and discoloration with resurfacing procedures. Our equipment includes Blue-U, Erbium resurfacing (Sciton), Erbium Pro-fractional (Sciton), as well as Pear Fractional (Cutera).

Lasers are the treatment of choice for permanent hair reduction. There are a multitude of technologies available for this type of treatment. IPL systems, yag 1064, BBL, diode, Alexandrite, Ruby and the list goes on. The type of laser best suited to use depends on skin color, hair color and thickness of the hair. But there are other factors not usually mentioned. This is the amount of pain felt during treatment and the speed at which the procedure is done.

We have multiple technologies available to our clients. All our systems are medical grade and we can match the proper technology, depending on the client.

To damage the growth center of the hair so that it will not grow back, laser energy is delivered to the body that penetrates deep enough to reach and get absorbed by the root of the hair. The key is to get enough energy to be absorbed by the hair root to damage it without burning the skin. Hair has a life cycle that has three stages. In the growth stage, there is a high concentration of melanin or color in the growth center of the hair root. It is at this stage that the laser can damage the hair follicle to the point that it cannot produce more hair. As at any given time, around a third of our hair is in the growth cycle. Thus in theory, only around a third of the hair can be damaged in one treatment. The hair cycle changes every four to six weeks and so the treatment must be repeated at a similar interval. Typically, four to six sessions are needed for a satisfactory result. With each successive treatment, the volume of hair will tend to be less and the thickness of the hair will be reduced to finer hair.

Botox is Botulinum toxin, a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, and is a powerful neurotoxin. The action of Botox is that it temporarily paralyses muscles for a period of four to six months. The benefit is that our faces have a lot of muscles. Movement of these muscles can cause visible wrinkles and lines. If they were injected by Botox, they then become temporarily paralyzed and thus the wrinkles cannot be made.

In addition to cosmetic applications to Botox, it can also help relieve conditions like TMJ, excessive sweating, headaches and muscle pain.

Fillers are typically artificial collagen that can be used to fill in space. Nasolabial folds, deep lines, nose and lip augmentation, can be modified using fillers.

Is the color of my skin important when considering laser treatment?

The type of skin type is very important. The darker your skin color, the more energy that will be absorbed during laser treatments. A chance of a burn or unwanted side effect increases with darker skin types. Make sure that the clinic you go has a lot of experience with your particular skin type.

Is the type of laser important or where it was made very important?

Laser companies sell their products to different groups. Some will only sell to doctors and are considered medical grade. These lasers will have a medical device license issued by Health Canada and have gone through extensive testing and reviews to make sure they do what they say they do and they are safe to use on the public. Then there is the spa grade type that you can find in a non-medical spa. The medical grade tends to be more powerful, the companies are usually public companies on the stock market like Cutera and Sciton. They have far more resources to develop and test their products and so are more safe and reliable.

What risks are involved with laser treatments?

The most common side effect is a burn. The chance increases with darker skin types. The other main side effect is hyperpigmentation or unwanted darkening of the skin. Because laser treatments deliver energy to the skin, the skin then becomes weakened and can go into a defensive mode. This can result in an overactive tanning type response to the area of treatment. These risks can be reduced by the experience of the provider and following proper after care protocol.

Will the improvements be permanent?

In many cases, the improvements are permanent. However, having laser treatments will not stop the natural progression of aging. If spots or wrinkle are reduced, with time new spots and wrinkles may come out. Some maintenance may be necessary to maximize long term gains.

What is the different about Trinity?

Since opening in 2005, we have thorough experience in treating many skin types, particularly darker skin types. The darker the skin type, the higher chance for side effects like hyperpigmentation. Our core staff spends one month a year in Korea, researching cosmetic treatment methods in Asia. In fact, many of our patients come to us after being turned away from other clinics that did not have experiencing with darker skin types. We are well experienced in treating Asian, South Asian, black, Olive skin types, and of course Caucasian skin types. We have the ability to mix and match technologies for the desired outcome for our clients.

Lasers have come a long way since they were introduced in the field of cosmetics. The technology has progressed to provide effective means of reducing signs of aging and sun damage. We at Trinity take pride in offering cosmetic laser treatments in a safe, professional manner, using the best cosmetic lasers available in the market today.

Esthetic lasers can be categorized by ablative and non-ablative. Ablative types remove skin and non-ablative does not. However, all lasers cause damage, and combined with the body’s healing process, we can have a desired result that is very safe and predictable.

With time, our faces will all show the signs of aging. Loose, sagging, thinning skin, age spots, redness and wrinkles will come to us all. Sun damage is the leading cause of accelerated aging signs to our skin. Treating or reversing sun damage and or the signs of aging, can be approached from different methods. There are a multitude of anti-aging creams, spa treatments like microdermabrasion, crystal peels, chemical peels and even cosmetic acupuncture. These methods can have acceptable results but the improvement may only be temporary and there are risks.

Even with the most modern lasers, there are risks of side effects. However, a skilled doctor can reduce risks with improvements that cannot be had with other softer, spa like methods.

At Trinity, we have multiple technologies to mix and match to achieve the desired outcome for our patients. We have a Cutera Xeo laser with Limelite, Prowave, 1064 Nd yag, Titan and Pearl Fractional. We also have a Sciton Laser with BBL, yag and Erbium resurfacing as well as Erbium Pro-Fractional. Finally, we have the latest Thermage CPT with vibrating hand piece.

Call us today for a free consultation to see what our lasers can do for you.
